In view of the recent cold weather, I would like to remind Residents of the provisions to keep the road open during icy conditions.
The Winchester City Council do not treat the Hill as it is a private road. There have been occasions when they have salted the surface but this was probably an error on behalf of the driver of the spreading vehicle.
There are several salt bins on the Hill located as follows:
1. A few yards or so above the post box at the top of the hill
2. Outside Arthur’s Court, just below the entrance
3.Just below entrance to Neatham, on the other side of the road
4. GED, just above the entrance
5. Hollygate entrance, behind the fence downhill, in bags
6. At the bottom of the hill, left hand side
It is up to residents to clear the portion of road adjacent to their frontage. We recommend that salt is used sparingly – in times of settled snow, it is only necessary to treat two strips (car wheelbase apart) as passing traffic soon spreads the salt to a wider area.
Note that cars have the most difficulty coming up the Hill as far as the bend above Westacre. After that, the road flattens out a little and traction improves.
